After training in Sydney at Julian Ashton Art School and Paddington Art School in the 1980's, Julie moved into commercial art and mural painting. She co-owned a popular design studio, the Chalk Art Shop, in Cairns until 2006 and published the Chalk Art Book along the way, still a popular seller.
Julie now works as a freelance artist and illustrator from her Cairns studio and tutors both at the Cairns Botanic Gardens and with Queensland's Flying Arts Touring Programme. During 2009 she accepted a residency at Tanks Arts Centre, culminating in the exhibition Offshoots. A follow up exhibition is scheduled for June 2010, pursuing the botanical theme.
Her recent research into the stories behind some of Cairns' Old Queenslander style houses, made possible by Arts Queensland and the Regional Arts Development Fund, will be used as a resource for a future exhibition in collaboration with the Cairns Museum.
Natural history, maps, architecture, figurative and botanical drawing all have a strong focus in both her illustrations and paintings. A tangible sense of Australian earthiness is often apparent in her work, whether it be in the texture of her weaving paintings or in the foreboding emptiness of an outback landscape as captured in The Warning.
